Reminiscence
There are many ways in which reminiscence can be helpful to those living with dementia. Reminiscence actually means sharing life experiences, memories and stories from the past
Sometimes a person living with dementia is more able to recall long term memories so reminiscence draws on this ability. So many of our everyday conversations and interactions rely on short-term memory. Reminiscence can help people with dementia gain competence and confidence as the person is able to relate to something.
We are all unique, and all have different life stories. Remembering things from the past is positive and can produce a feeling of a accomplishment . Many people with dementia find themselves often having things done ‘for’ them or ‘to’ them. Talking about the past can bring up happy memories and good feelings, and this can be a wonderful experience. We will be developing various tools in this section to help and will also be developing a photography section which will have old photos of areas within banes which you may use as an aid to reminiscence.
